Grey Whale Cove State beach from the Inspire One drone

Testing out the Inspire One drone shooting 4K and around sunset light on the Grey Whale Cove State near Pacifica. The drone handles great when flying and and hold ground quite well when faced with a big gust of wind – definitely an improvement over the phantom 2. I’m trying to love the camera / lens and at the most I can say its alright to good. Filming in 4K, I find the image to be a little ‘splotchy’ and lacks the clarity that the goPro Hero 4 has. From what I read online the Inspire One camera and the GoPro Hero 4 use the same sensor, so I don’t know why the image is radically different. The plus side of this camera is that it has a rectilinier lens, which the GoPro lacks. I’m looking forward the next version of the Inspire camera....
Dia de los Meurtos / Day of the Dead San Francisco

Dia de los Meurtos / Day of the Dead San Francisco

Over 15,000 people gathered in San Francisco’s Mission District to participate in the 26th annual “Dia de los Muertos”, otherwise known as the “Day of the Dead” procession. The festival is to honor the people close to us who have passed way. The participants gather at sunset on 22nd St and Bryant to witness a music and dance event then form a procession through the Mission and ultimately end up in Garfield Park. In an eerie quietness in the park of thousands of people, there were hundreds of alters constructed by family and friends who lost loved ones. Participants were invited to write remembrance messages to loved ones, that hung on strings wound from tree to tree. More information can be found at the official Day of the Dead website. Montreal in Autumn

I spent a week up in Montreal, Canada to test out the new DJI Phantom 2 Quadcopter. It’s a little like riding a motorcycle – lots of fun and you can get a little cocky flying it, which gets you into a spot of trouble. I learnt then that the video transmitter does not work well when trees are in the way, which caused a runaway drone and getting lost high up in the tree. Fortunately I managed to retrieve the drone right before I left Canada and this is what I got from the two days flying...

Homeless Dogs

Homeless Dogs

A collection of stray dog photographs shot in both India and Cuba. After visiting India in 2007 I noticed that it seemed like there were more stray dogs than the people living there. When I last looked at magazines of India it was all fascinating photographs of the people, culture and the architecture. However the lowest caste on the Totem pole I found were the dogs, hence the term, “Being treated like a dog”. Not just India, but all over the world, dogs and cats roam the streets surviving on the rubbish that humans leave behind. I’ve witnessed stray dogs being fed and cared for, some being abused, some very sick and some eat what looks like food, but isn’t, because its all they can find. They are invisible. It’s says so much that we as a humans treat our fellow earth-mates with disrespect and as a means to an end. This post is dedicated to all creatures sick, abused, neglected & caged, in essence been given a tough ride by humanity.   Varanasi, India [break] “When I look into the eyes of an animal I do not see an animal. Burning Man 2013 – Cargo Cult

Burning Man 2013 – Cargo Cult

Welcome   This is the third Burning Man event I have been to (see 2007 & 2009) and initially it was my intention to keep my camera tucked away for most of the event in an effort stay more in the present in the environment. However that intention was short lived and I returned from the playa 400 gigabytes (a lot of content) of data heavier than when I left with, hence this post is quite long. So sit back and get a coffee. It became pretty evident to me upon my first day there that my passion of taking photos is the best gift I can share with to the people of Black Rock City – then sending the photos back to the people I photographed and sharing them with the world. Through my camera I got to make lasting friendships and document people with the most fascinating faces, some of which were painted, some wearing goggles and also variety interesting hats. What is stood out to me on a human level on the playa is the connections the people create with each other. Participants relax their guard, communication opens up and flows freely and some enjoy the benefit week long (and perhaps longer) relationship with a lucky stranger they met out in deep playa. Somewhere along the way I became a playa wedding photographer and got to shoot some great weddings. Check out the weddings of Emilio & Claire, Liam & Kat and lastly, the fire breathers John & Corrine. Each one has their very own unique story and flavor. When the wind conditions were right, I spent time over a the Department of Tethered Aviation (DOTA) documenting in both video and photo the multi...

The Plateau Montreal

The Plateau Montreal

The plateau is the hippest district of Montreal (some say the world).  Formerly a working-class neighborhood, the old stone buildings and their wrought iron staircases now provide a backdrop to a free-spirited, creative community. The, predominantly, francophone area’s legendary bohemian status and its proximity to McGill University attracts huge numbers of students, artists and musicians.  Close to 100,000 people squeeze into the 8 square kilometers below the eastern slopes of Mont Royal.  Those Montreal residents who live elsewhere come as often as they can to the plateau to hang out in its parks, cafés, and bookshops. The brightly painted buildings reflect the vibrancy and vitality of residents in a neighborhood where you are more likely to see someone carrying a guitar than a briefcase.
