Unlikely as it may seem, a surfing community has sprung up in Montreal. During the spring, summer, autumn and (for the extra brave ones) winter, Montreal locals come to a secluded spot, hidden behind Montreal’s famous Habitat 67 building, to try their luck surfing the St Lawrence River rapids.

It’s not Hawaii. There are no tubes; the sand has been replaced by mud and rock; and the “fresh” water makes boards less buoyant, but it’s surfing. Surfing a standing wave requires a different approach to surfing at a beach; when you dive in the rapids wash you down into the wave; you have to learn how to read the wild, white water.
